Spiritual Wllness and welll being

In our latest blog series, we are looking at the eight pillars of wellness and considering how each, when maintained and supported, can allow us to become the healthiest version of ourselves.

In our fourth blog article, we look at the pillar of spiritual wellness.

What is spiritual wellness?

While there are some commonalities, the spiritual wellness pillar will look different for everyone as it’s so personal. The degree to which it features in an individual’s life also varies depending on how they define it, and it can evolve and fluctuate over time.

In general, spiritual wellness is your sense of purpose or direction by which you develop the values that you live your life by. Many nurture their spirituality through meditation, prayer, or other methods that they feel help to build a stronger connection to nature or a higher power.

Spiritual wellness isn’t defined by a particular religion or belief system but is an intrinsically personal journey – meaning the ways in which you protect, maintain, and strengthen this element of your overall wellbeing is very much up to you.

Why is spiritual wellness important to overall wellbeing?

Without a sense of spiritual wellness, some can feel that they lose touch with their values, which can unsettle life’s balance.

It has the capability to ground us during periods of change, make our decisions and choices easier, and give us the resiliency to survive times of adversity.

How can I assess my spiritual wellness?

Below are some questions to think about when assessing your spiritual wellness.

  1. What gives me hope?
  2. Am I finding ways to contribute to the community or environment that so often re-energises me?
  3. Where do I find comfort in tough times?
  4. What gives my life meaning and purpose?
  5. Am I tolerant of other people’s views? Am I giving enough attention to expanding my awareness of different ethnic, racial and religious groups?
  6. Do I make time in my day to relax?
  7. Are my decisions and actions guided by my values?

How can you achieve spiritual wellness?

Here are 5 top tips to help kickstart your journey into boosting your spiritual wellbeing:

  1. Meditate for a few minutes each day to help focus your thoughts.
  2. Dedicate time to yourself. This only needs to be a small amount of time each day, but by making this time a priority, and ensuring you are free of distractions, interruptions, and major activities, it can leave you with some valuable moments to relax, reflect, meditate, or pray.
  3. Keep a journal. Regular writing can help clear your mind and keep you on track for any goals you may have set for yourself.
  4. Select your top three values in life and write them down. Holding these values close will help guide your everyday decisions and help make it easier to say “yes” to things that matter, and “no” to things that fall outside of your values.
  5. Practice mindfulness as a way of checking in with your intentions, guiding your actions, and maintaining a values-based approach to life. The NHS has some useful guidance on mindfulness at https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/self-help/tips-and-support/mindfulness/

It should be noted that the path to wellness is not one size fits all, but the common thread for everyone is that wellness requires a holistic approach. The eight pillars are not prescriptive but should help form the basis of a personalised journey.
